Spending summer in the city is all well and good. But when temperatures swell, and your thirst increases, you owe it to yourself to visit to some of Long Island’s finest wineries. From salmon- and orange-hued sparkling rosés, to crisp, zesty whites, Long Island is handsomely stocked with vintages to lift, refresh, and enlighten you. The scenery is quite something, too.
Wölffer Estate Vineyard|139 Sagg Road, Sagaponack, N.Y.
The rustic and modern Wölffer Estate Vineyard sets the mood for a wine-tasting extravaganza. Be waltzed through the vineyard’s spectacular selection of reds, whites, rosés, and sparkling wines, while admiring the lush, rolling vineyards where they started out life as grapes on a vine. There’s also ample outdoor space for relaxing and drinking, where you can shade yourself (and your wine) beneath oversized parasols. At Wölffer, they appreciate that fine wine calls for fine food; order a charcuterie board and allow the sommeliers to fix you up with some matches made in heaven. If you’re keen to take a few favorites back to your Long Island City condo (and you will be), sign up to Wölffer’s esteemed Wine Club — you’ll get quarterly shipments of selected wines sent to your home, and enjoy special events and member discounts.
Channing Daughters Winery|1927 Scuttlehole Road, Bridgehampton, N.Y.
At the height of summer, life can offer few greater pleasures than a chilled glass of rosato. The 2018 pink wines have now arrived at Channing Daughters Winery, meaning you can savor a Rosato di Syrah during your visit. Then again, owing to their six vineyards, and two dozen grape varieties, there are few types of wine that you won’t find for sale here. If you’ve not yet sampled an orange wine, may we recommend the 2014 Meditazione — a delicious skin-fermented white blend. While at Channing, remember to visit the Sculpture Garden, an al fresco spectacle of owner/sculptor Walter Channing’s works.
Sparkling Pointe|39750 County Road 48, Southold, N.Y.
If there’s a special occasion on the horizon — or perhaps you’re just looking to christen your new LIC condominium — Sparkling Pointe must be at the top of your itinerary. Founders Cynthia and Tom Rosicki focus solely on making sparkling wines from their 40 acres of vineyard. Tours are held daily, allowing you to see the vineyard, crush pad, tank room, and cellar in action. Then, it’s time for the best part: a sampling session in the bright and breezy Tasting Room. After delighting in the Grand Tasting Flight, you’ll inevitably be tempted into a bottle of the NV Cuvée Carnaval Rosé or 2015 Topaz Impérial Brut Rosé. Sheer luxury.
Sherwood House Vineyards|1291 Main Road, Jamesport, N.Y.
Offering live music and freshly shucked Iron Point oysters throughout the summer, Sherwood House Vineyards is the kind of Long Island winery you visit to have a good time. Add to that its setting: a gloriously renovated 1870s farmhouse, surrounded by bucolic Jamesport. (This place feels like a home away from home.) The final, and most important, ingredient is, of course, the wine. Order one of the flights (including Classic, Library, and Oregon Road), and prepare to lose yourself on an oenophile’s odyssey. This boutique winery may be humble in size, but it’ll broaden your wine horizons to no end.
